Inklings Program in SA
Following a successful pilot in Western Australia, implementation of the Inklings in SA was a key recommendation of South Australia’s Royal Commission into Early Childhood Education and Care. Cultural supports and interpreters are available throughout the program to support Inklings access for all families.
Launched in April 2025 the 10-session program uses short videos of a caregiver interacting with their baby to help them to better understand the different ways their baby communicates their thoughts, feelings and needs. With the guidance of a trained Inklings practitioner, caregivers learn strategies to build on their strengths as a responsive communication partner for their baby.
Inklings sessions are delivered for 1 hour every fortnight in children’s centres, health clinics, at home or via telehealth.
If you live in South Australia and your baby is aged between 6-18 months, you may be eligible to participate in Inklings. There are no out-of-pocket expenses for families.
Inklings is jointly funded by the Government of South Australia and the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.

I’m not sure if it’s because I’m more aware and trying to be mindful of his communications, or if it’s because I’m more conscious that he’s trying to communicate more, but I’m definitely seeing a lot more response from him.”
Inklings Family
“I didn't think I'd get much out of the program, but I was definitely wrong. You basically get to play with your kid and then get feedback. I was presented with really helpful feedback and skills that have improved my interaction with both of my kids. I understand Inklings is targeted but I'd recommend it for all parents.”
Inklings Family
“The skills and tools I was taught in Inklings, I have been able to apply at home, and my little one has come leaps and bounds since completing the program”
