Inklings is a 10-session program that uses short videos of a caregiver interacting with their baby to help them to better understand the different ways that their baby communicates their thoughts, feelings and needs.
With the guidance of a trained practitioner, caregivers will learn strategies to build on their own strengths as a responsive communication partner for their baby.
Inklings is suitable for babies aged 6 - 18 months of age.
Families or caregivers may benefit from Inklings if they have noticed differences in how their baby communicates and relates with others.
This may include baby not using gestures such as clapping or waving in the same way as other babies do at the same age. It may be difficult to gain the baby's attention, they may not point to show things they are interested in or may not be interested in joining in social games like peek-a-boo.
If a baby shows several of these differences, a family may seek support from a program like Inklings.
All sessions involve recording a short 5-6 minute video of a caregiver with their baby before reviewing that video together with your practitioner. Through pausing and discussing the video, sessions aim to develop a caregiver’s understanding of their unique baby’s skills and responses. The practitioner also supports the family to learn how best to support their baby’s social communication development.
At the end of each session, the practitioner will assist the caregiver to develop a plan for incorporating key messages from the session into their daily routine.
Sessions can be done in person with the practitioner or via telehealth technology.
The program centres around the caregivers, who we recognise as the most important people in their baby's life.
